What to Pack for Kazakhstan: A Practical Packing List

Packing for Kazakhstan comes down to one word: layers. You might start a summer day in a hot city and finish it at 3,000 m in cold mountain wind, so the trick is being ready for both. Here's a practical list for a trip focused on Almaty and its mountains.

The golden rule: layers

Even in high summer, the mountains are far cooler than the city, and weather changes fast. Build outfits from layers you can add and shed:

  • A base layer (t-shirt or light long-sleeve).
  • A warm mid-layer (fleece or light down) — non-negotiable, every season.
  • A windproof / waterproof shell — the mountain wind and sudden showers make this essential.

Footwear

  • Sturdy walking shoes or light hiking boots — the single most important item. Charyn Canyon's floor is sandy and uneven, and the lake and meadow trails need grip.
  • Comfortable city shoes for wandering Almaty.
  • In winter, warm, waterproof boots with good tread for snow and ice.

By season

  • Spring/autumn (Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct): layers, a warm jacket, and a shell. Mornings and evenings are cold; days can be mild.
  • Summer (Jul–Aug): light clothes for the hot city, but always pack a warm layer and shell for the mountains. Sun protection is vital.
  • Winter (Nov–Mar): full winter kit — insulated coat, hat, gloves, thermal layers and proper boots. (See Almaty in winter.)

Day-trip essentials

For a mountain or canyon day, bring a small daypack with:

  • Water (more than you think) and snacks — options on the road are limited.
  • Sun protection — hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen. The canyon has no shade and the mountain sun is strong.
  • A warm layer and shell, even on a sunny morning.
  • Cash for park fees and rural stops, plus a card for the city. (See our money guide.)
  • A power bank and your phone (download offline maps and the Yandex Go app).

Documents and health

  • Passport and a note of your visa or visa-free status. (See our visa guide.)
  • Travel insurance that covers mountain activities.
  • A small personal first-aid kit and any medication you need.
  • A reusable water bottle — stick to bottled or filtered water.

What you don't need to overpack

Almaty is a modern city with shops and pharmacies, so you can buy most things you forget. Focus your packing on the mountain-ready clothing and good shoes that are harder to sort out on arrival.
