Kazakhstan Visa Guide: Who Travels Visa-Free (and Who Needs a Visa)
Kazakhstan has become much easier to visit over the past decade. Travelers from many countries can enter visa-free, and for others there's a straightforward e-visa. Here's the practical picture — but always confirm the current rules for your passport with an official source before you fly, as visa policy changes.
Visa-free entry
Citizens of a long list of countries — including the United States, United Kingdom, the EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, the UAE and many more — can enter Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism. That covers the vast majority of our guests, who simply arrive, get a stamp, and go.
There's usually a limit on total days within a 180-day period, so if you're on a very long trip, check the fine print.
The e-visa
If your nationality isn't on the visa-free list, Kazakhstan offers an electronic visa applied for online in advance. It's designed to be simpler than the old embassy process. Apply through the official government e-visa portal, not a third-party reseller.
Registration
For most short visits this is handled automatically. When you enter Kazakhstan, your arrival is typically registered electronically at the border, and hotels register their guests as well. If you're staying long-term or in private accommodation, check whether you need to register with the migration service — for a normal short holiday it rarely comes up.
Passport validity and entry
- Your passport should generally be valid for the duration of your stay (many travelers keep the usual six-months rule as a buffer).
- Keep a note of your accommodation address for the arrival card if one is requested.
- Border officers may ask about your length of stay and plans — a simple honest answer is all that's needed.
How to check for your country
Visa rules change, so verify before booking flights:
- The official Kazakhstan Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa pages.
- The Kazakhstan e-visa portal for the current country lists.
- Your own government's travel advisory for Kazakhstan.
