3 Days in Almaty: The Perfect Itinerary for First-Timers
Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit to Almaty: enough to enjoy the city, get into the mountains, and reach Kazakhstan's signature canyon and lakes — without a mad rush. Here's a tried-and-tested plan.
Day 1 — The city and the near mountains
Start slow with Almaty itself. Walk Panfilov Park and the wooden Zenkov Cathedral, browse the Green Bazaar for dried fruit and horse sausage, and grab lunch in a café near the Arbat. In the afternoon, ride the cable car up Kok-Tobe for the classic view over the city with the mountains behind it.
If you'd rather be in the mountains from the start, swap the afternoon for Medeu and Shymbulak — the skating rink and the ski resort above it, with cable cars toward Talgar Pass. (See the Medeu + Shymbulak transfer.)
Day 2 — Into the Tien Shan
Give a full half-day to the high mountains. Two great options:
- Big Almaty Lake — a turquoise alpine reservoir an hour from town, best in good light for photos. (See the Big Almaty Lake tour.)
- Kok Zhailau — a half-day alpine-meadow hike straight from the city edge, if you'd rather walk. (See our Kok Zhailau guide.)
Spend the evening back in the city trying Kazakh food — beshbarmak, manty or lagman. (See our Kazakh food guide.)
Day 3 — Charyn Canyon and the lakes
The big one. Leave early for Charyn Canyon and its Valley of Castles, then continue to Lake Kaindy and the first Kolsay Lake — Kazakhstan's three signature landscapes (canyon, sunken forest, alpine lake) in a single day. It's a long day, around 10–12 hours, but it's the highlight for most visitors. (See the Charyn + Kolsay tour and our Charyn day-trip guide.)
Prefer to hand it off?
Our 3-Day Complete Almaty Package bundles the mountains, the Golden Man and Charyn with airport transfers — private transport and an English-speaking guide throughout, from $450 per vehicle. (See the 3-Day package.)
Tips for the three days
- Book the long Charyn day for good weather if you can — it's worth being flexible.
- Bring a warm layer every day; the mountains are cool even in summer.
- Carry some cash for park fees and small cafés, though Kaspi/card works widely in the city. (See our money guide.)
