Kok Zhailau: The Best Day Hike Above Almaty

If you want a real mountain hike but only have half a day — and no long drive — Kok Zhailau is the answer. This broad alpine meadow sits in the mountains directly above Almaty, reached on foot from the edge of the city, and it's the classic day hike for locals and visitors alike.

What is Kok Zhailau?

Kok Zhailau ("green summer pasture") is a high, open alpine meadow at around 2,000–2,500 m in the Ile-Alatau National Park, tucked between the Medeu and Butakovka gorges. It's a place of rolling grassland, wildflowers in season, spruce forest and sweeping views — a genuine slice of the Tien Shan within sight of the city.

The hike

The classic route climbs from the edge of Almaty up through spruce forest to the open meadow, and you can turn around there or continue across toward the gorges beyond.

  • Distance and time: roughly a half-day, commonly 4–6 hours round trip depending on your route and pace.
  • Difficulty: moderate — there's a steady climb, and the altitude makes it feel harder than the distance suggests, but no technical skill is needed.
  • Reward: meadow panoramas, mountain air, and the satisfaction of a proper hike close to town.

When to go

  • Late spring to autumn (May–October) is the prime window — green meadows in early summer, wildflowers, and golden forest in September.
  • Summer is popular; start early to enjoy the cool of the morning.
  • Winter turns the trail into a snowshoeing route for the experienced, but it's a different, more serious undertaking.

What to bring

  • Proper walking shoes — the trail climbs and can be uneven or muddy after rain.
  • Warm and waterproof layers — mountain weather changes fast, even on a sunny morning.
  • Water and snacks — there are no shops on the trail.
  • Sun protection — the meadow is open and exposed.

A note on the trailhead

The usual starting points are on the southern edge of Almaty, near the Medeu road or the Prospekt al-Farabi area, so getting to the trail is quick. A local guide or driver makes the logistics effortless and keeps you on the right path, since junctions aren't always well signed.

Pair it with the city

Because it's a half-day, Kok Zhailau slots neatly into an Almaty trip — hike in the morning, relax in the city or at a café in the afternoon. (See our 3 days in Almaty itinerary.) For a bigger mountain day, look at Big Almaty Lake instead.
