Kok-Tobe: Hilltop Views Over Almaty, a Cable Car and a Beatles Statue

If you do one thing in Almaty itself, make it Kok-Tobe — the green hill on the city's southern edge that gives the best view over the whole of Almaty, with the Tien Shan mountains rising behind. It's part viewpoint, part family park, and an easy, fun half-day in the city.

What is Kok-Tobe?

Kok-Tobe ("green hill") rises to about 1,100 m just southeast of the centre. On top you'll find a small amusement park, cafés and restaurants, walking paths, and — crowning it all — the tall Almaty TV Tower, one of the city's landmarks (the tower itself isn't open to visitors, but it's the skyline's exclamation point).

The cable car

Half the fun is getting there. A cable car glides up from near the city centre, giving a lovely aerial view over the rooftops and parks as you rise toward the hill. You can also reach the top by road, but the cable car is the classic approach and a highlight for kids.

The views

From the top, Almaty spreads out below in its grid of tree-lined avenues, with the snow-capped mountains as a backdrop — the definitive Almaty panorama. It's spectacular by day and again at sunset and after dark, when the city lights come on. Bring a camera.

The Beatles monument

One of Kok-Tobe's quirks is a bronze monument to the Beatles — the only one of its kind, with John, Paul, George and Ringo gathered around a bench. It's a favourite photo spot and a nod to how the band's music quietly crossed the Iron Curtain. Sit with Lennon for the obligatory shot.

What else is up there

  • Family rides and a small zoo corner — good with children.
  • Cafés and restaurants with a view — a nice spot for a drink at golden hour.
  • Walking paths and gardens to stroll.
  • Souvenir stalls for gifts.

When to go

Kok-Tobe is enjoyable year-round. Aim for a clear day so the mountains show, and consider timing your visit for late afternoon into sunset to catch both the daytime panorama and the city lights. Weekends are busiest.

Fitting it into your trip

Kok-Tobe pairs perfectly with a city day — combine it with Panfilov Park, the Green Bazaar and the cafés of the Arbat. (See our 3 days in Almaty itinerary and things to do in Almaty.)
