Why Almaty Is Called the "Father of Apples"
Here's a fact that surprises almost every visitor: the apple in your fruit bowl traces its ancestry to the mountains around Almaty. The city's name literally means "father of apples" — and the science backs up the poetry. This is one of Kazakhstan's best stories.
What the name means
Almaty comes from the Kazakh word alma, apple. The older Soviet-era name, Alma-Ata, was usually translated as "father of apples." Whatever the exact grammar, the city has always been associated with the fruit — and for good reason.
The birthplace of the domestic apple
The wild ancestor of the modern apple is a species called Malus sieversii, and it still grows in the fruit-and-nut forests of the Tien Shan on the slopes above and around Almaty. Genetic studies point to these Central Asian wild apples as the primary origin of the domestic apple, Malus domestica, that spread west along the Silk Road and eventually across the whole world.
In other words: every Gala, Fuji and Granny Smith is a distant descendant of the wild apples of Kazakhstan. The mountains here are, quite literally, the apple's homeland.
The famous Aport apple
Almaty had its own legendary variety, the Aport — an enormous, fragrant apple that became a symbol of the city in the twentieth century, prized for growing to remarkable size in the microclimate of the foothills. Aport orchards have shrunk over the decades, but the apple remains a point of local pride, and efforts continue to preserve it.
Why it matters
The wild apple forests aren't just a charming origin story — they're a living genetic treasure. Because they contain the wild diversity the cultivated apple has lost, scientists see them as a vital resource for breeding disease-resistant, climate-hardy apples in the future. Protecting the Tien Shan's wild fruit forests has real global significance.
Where to see it
The wild apple habitat is woven into the foothill forests around the city and its national parks. A day in the mountains east of Almaty — around Turgen and the Ile-Alatau slopes — takes you through the kind of wild fruit-and-nut forest the apple came from, especially beautiful in spring blossom and autumn.
