Shymbulak: Almaty's Mountain Resort — Skiing, Gondolas and Summer Views

Shymbulak (also spelled Chimbulak) is Kazakhstan's largest mountain resort, perched in the Tien Shan just above Almaty. In winter it's the country's top ski destination; in summer it's a cool, scenic escape with cable cars climbing past 3,000 m. Here's how to plan a visit.

Where is Shymbulak?

Shymbulak sits at about 2,200 m, directly above the Medeu skating rink in the same mountain gorge, around 25 km from central Almaty. You reach the resort base by a gondola from Medeu (or partway by road), and from there a series of cable cars carry you higher, up toward Talgar Pass at around 3,200 m — one of the easiest ways anywhere to stand high in the Tien Shan without a hike.

Winter: skiing and snowboarding

From roughly December to April, Shymbulak is a full ski resort with groomed runs for all levels, rentals and instructors. Lift access from the city is quick — you can be on the slopes within an hour or two of breakfast in town.

Summer: hiking, cable cars and views

Out of ski season Shymbulak stays open as a sightseeing and hiking destination. Ride the cable cars up for panoramic mountain views, walk the alpine trails, and enjoy cool air when the city is hot. For many visitors the cable-car ride itself is the main draw.

How to get to Shymbulak from Almaty

The simplest route is a drive up to Medeu, then the gondola to the Shymbulak base, then the cable cars higher. A private transfer to Medeu makes the whole trip easy, especially with the gondola and lift queues to factor in. (See our guide to Medeu, at the bottom of the same gorge.)

What to bring

  • Warm layers, even in summer — it's much colder at the top cable-car station than in the city.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen — strong sun and, in winter, snow glare.
  • Cash or card for cable-car and gondola tickets, which are bought on site.

We run a private half-day transfer from Almaty to Medeu and up to Shymbulak$100 per vehicle for up to 4 people, including hotel pickup and drop-off and a private driver. It's a driver transfer rather than a guided tour, and the gondola and cable-car tickets are purchased on site, so you set your own pace.
