The Assy Plateau: A High-Mountain Steppe and Observatory Near Almaty

For travelers who want something wilder and emptier than the headline sights, the Assy Plateau delivers: a vast high-mountain grassland east of Almaty where nomads still bring their herds in summer, an observatory watches the sky, and the horizon rolls on unbroken. It's one of the region's best off-the-beaten-path day trips.

What is the Assy Plateau?

Assy (Assy-Turgen) is a broad high plateau at around 2,500 m in the mountains east of Almaty, beyond the Turgen Gorge. Unlike the forested gorges closer to the city, Assy is open alpine steppe — huge, treeless and windswept, ringed by peaks. The drive up climbs through the forest and then bursts out onto this rooftop grassland, and the scale is the whole point.

Summer nomad camps

In the warm months, herders drive their horses, sheep and cattle up to Assy for the rich summer pasture, setting up jailau (seasonal camps). It's one of the more accessible places near Almaty to glimpse the living nomadic tradition that still shapes Kazakh life — yurts and grazing herds against an enormous sky. (See our Kazakh culture guide.)

The Assy-Turgen Observatory

The plateau is home to a mountain astronomical observatory, its domes standing out on the open grassland. The high altitude, dry air and distance from city lights make Assy an excellent place for stargazing — on a clear night the sky is spectacular. The observatory buildings are a landmark on the plateau even from a distance.

When to go

Assy is very much a summer destination. The access road climbs high and is best from roughly June to September; outside those months snow can close it and the nomads are gone. Even in summer, the plateau is cold and windy — it feels far higher than the city below.

What to know before you go

  • It's remote. There are no shops or facilities on the plateau — bring everything you need.
  • The road is rough. A capable vehicle and a driver who knows the route matter; conditions change with the weather.
  • Dress warm. Wind and altitude make Assy chilly even on a hot city day.
  • Respect the camps. If you meet herders, be a courteous guest — hospitality runs both ways.

Combine it with Turgen

Assy sits beyond the Turgen Gorge and its waterfalls, so the two pair naturally into a day that mixes forest, falls and high steppe. (See the Golden Man, Esik & Turgen tour for the Turgen side.)
